Preserving Your Child’s Clear Sight
Myopia is on the rise.
More children than ever are showing early signs of myopia, also known as nearsightedness. The rate is climbing so quickly that experts believe half of the world’s population will have some degree of myopia by 2050. Our mission is to help manage myopia’s effects and preserve your child’s clear sight.
It all starts when you book your child’s next eye exam at any of our locations in Fontana, Upland, and Rancho Cucamonga. Book their appointment today, or read on to learn more about this condition and how we can help.
Book AppointmentWhat Is Myopia?
Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a common refractive error that affects how clear your distance vision is.
Myopia occurs when the eye elongates over time, affecting how light focuses on the retina. It typically develops during childhood but can progress into adulthood.
Glasses and contact lenses can help correct myopic vision problems, but we can recommend strategies that help slow its progression too.
High Myopia & Its Risks
Severe myopia cases, also known as high myopia, can have long-lasting or permanent effects on your child’s vision. If you have a family history of high myopia, you may have a risk of experiencing other eye diseases and conditions, including:
- Myopic macular degeneration
- Glaucoma
- Retinal tears or detachments
- Cataracts
If you develop these issues, you may risk experiencing vision loss. Our mission is to help control myopia progression at its earliest stages to help protect your family’s eye health and preserve your sight.
Ortho-K: Overnight Myopia Management
Orthokeratology, or ortho-k, is a unique myopia management technique we can recommend to help slow progression in children, teenagers, and adults.
These lenses are worn at night while sleeping. During this time, the lenses gently mold the cornea to help correct vision problems related to myopia development. You can remove the lenses in the morning and enjoy crisp vision throughout the day!
Is Ortho-K Safe?
With proper care and management, ortho-k lenses are as safe as any other type of contact lens. However, because they’re worn while sleeping, there are additional considerations to be aware of.
If you or your child struggles with eye infections, dry eye, or corneal conditions like keratoconus, we might not recommend ortho-k treatment.
Is Ortho-K Permanent?
Ortho-k treatment is not permanent, and the cornea will revert to its original shape after a few days of not wearing the lenses.
For consistent results, please wear the lenses as recommended by your doctor.
Cataract Treatment
Often, obstructions to vision as a result of cataracts can be remedied through corrective lenses. But, cataracts can increase in size and may get to a point where glasses or contact lenses no longer provide the vision you want. In this case, we may recommend surgery.
If you’re having difficulty driving or performing your job safely, are struggling to watch television or read, or are experiencing challenges with daily activities that decrease your quality of life, it might be time to explore surgery.
Cataract surgery is safe and effective, and we will ensure you understand the procedure and your options.
Other Myopia Control Strategies
In addition to ortho-k, we offer a few other strategies to help manage myopia progression.
The first step to getting the right treatment for your child is a comprehensive eye exam. During the exam, we’ll measure your child’s prescription, determine how myopia affects their vision over time, and develop a personalized strategy.
Atropine Eye Drops
Atropine eye drops are a medication that can be used to slow myopia progression in children.
We may recommend using these eye drops regularly, but we may also combine them with other strategies based on your child’s needs.
Multifocal Lenses
Multifocal lenses are designed with multiple prescriptions to help people see clearly at various distances.
Doctors have found that these lenses can also help manage myopia progression by focusing peripheral light right in front of the retina, which sends a signal to the eye that can help slow down eye elongation.
Calculate Your Child’s Myopia Progression
The Global Myopia Centre is a not-for-profit organization focused on helping parents and children understand myopia’s effect on vision. They even provide a handy myopia calculator that helps measure myopia progression in your child so you can make an informed decision on managing your child’s sight.
